I would guess all mk3's should have a ecu.

Even the mk2's have ECU's, do you mean a non immobilised ECU?
Early ones didn't have an Immobilliser >95 I think.
Check in the scuttle where the windscreen wipers are on drivers side.
Get the code off your ECU and the code off the belt cover/ barcode thing for your engine code ABF, 2E etc

ECU's look like this....

I recently did an ECU change on my ABF. I searched high and low for a non-immobilised ECU and finally found one in, of all places, Puerto Rico!

Cost me about 175 squid to get it sent over.

Rocking horse sh!t to find, but the part no. was 037 906 024 ab.

The 'ab' revision is the one you would have to look for if you want non-imm.

ye i found the ecu next to the pollen filter. the engine that was origionaly in it was a 1.8 abs engine. ive been offerd a 2 litre engine with its ecu of a car of roughly the same age, i dont know its engine code. would i have to change the whole wirring lombe for the engine to run ? would there be alot of electrical work involved. sorry if im being a bit vague.

 yikes! I got mine from a guy in Aberdeen, even if he sent me an ABS ECU to start with.

Good info part no as mine is in the garage somewhere.

I believe, but don't quote me on this, that you can bypass the immobiliser on the later ECU's, can't remember the exact details but Danny_P or someone may be better able to advise?

Your going to need the loom from the fusebox forward.
