AEX to ABF Conversion

Hi, just wondered if i could gain some extra knowledge on parts needed for the swap. Its a 1997 mk3. Got hold of an engine, engine mounts, manifolds, airbox, all ancillaries, downpipe, exhuast system, loom, ecu and fusebox. Going to buy 16v clocks.

Just wondering whats the best gearbox to get. Is it best to get a mk3 8v gti gearbox or a mk2 16v gearbox? When doing the swap whats the situation with the flywheel and clutch? Do i need to change to match the gearbox? Is there any other gearboxes that will fit?

I also have bought an uprated suspension kit and know i need to get bigger brakes. I want to keep the 4 stud wheels i have on it so is the corrado 16v or mk2 16v hubs a straight swap? or will i need wishbones also. I also have heard the arb i have got on mine will cause an issue with where it sits so will i need to change that also? Do i need to change anything for the power steering?

I know theres lots of questions but i would rather check on everything before i dig into it.

Why not use a Mk3 16v gearbox (which is suited to the engine anyway!) and convert your car to hydraulic clutch and cable change?

i assumed this would be a complicated process and i havent really looked into it. The only reason i havent looked into it is because it means i will have to spend more on new parts but if its not that expensive and the swap is pretty simple then i have no issues

The swap is not that simple, everything needs changing to be honest.

Plus one has to ask why build what you can buy.

Fair point but it is still the hard way to do it with starting with a small engine car.

Plus if you're going to do all of that then you might aswell just chuck a VR lump in instead of the ABF

check lazylunatics thread in dubrides/projects as he's used a std mk3 (although fitted a 1.8t) but he can help with gearbox,clutch,suspension and brakes as he's still 4 stud
