How about if youre using a Mac? I assume I should be able to do it as long as you format the drive properly? FAT or something?

I presume it has to be FAT32...haven't tried on our iMac though!

Had forgotten RCD/RNS could play AAC files - think they have to be unprotected AAC (non-DRM).

I still haven't copied my full collection to the HDD - I think there's two options for doing it - SD Card or CD/DVD.  SD Card is hopelessly slow, may try using a DVD later...no idea why you can't copy from a USB Drive...

Useful link http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/itunesexport/

Exports playlists to .M3U format which the RNS510 seems to like.  Had to manually edit the results in Notepad to make the paths relative (i.e. no C:\Document and Settings stuff at the start).

Well I exported all itunes music to dvd and it works brilliantly...except, and I knew this was the case but tried anyway, the music I bought/downloaded through itunes is in MPEG-4 format and can't be read. So I've got folders like 'Them Crooked Vultures' with no bloody music in them!

Have downloaded an MPEG-4 to MP3 converter so am assuming that will work.

I also reckon the sound quality, once transferred to the system is better but then that might just be me!

An ipod interface is standard (Multimedia Device Interface) - when you spec the sat nav with armrest mounted CD autochanger you loose the MDI. The CD changer uses the same input on the back of the sat nav as the MDI so unfortunately you can't have both.

Mk6Maniac, I have since discovered that you can add a MDI and keep the CD changer. See discussion in this thread:

VW do a kit that fits in the glovebox. Some more info here:

and here in bold type, identifying the connector pins on the 12-pin connector used for the CD changer:

I'm not sure this is plug n play but I'm going to investigate a little further.

Nice, thats really interesting actually.

But I reckon, now I'm uploading  to the HDD I wont be interested in using the ipod at all. I still think getting a 6 CD autochanger is bloody useless in this day and age and so Im a little bit annoyed I didnt spot that at order stage but the HDD more than makes up for it and I prefer it too, means I dont have to have CDs rattling around in the door storage holders and my ipod flapping about the car when I'm driving!

Rock n roll...

Glad its working for you.  Having similar thoughts - HDD is a bit irritating to get going but seems like iPod's aren't always straightforward either!  Being able to put Playlists on the HDD is cool now as well (should also work on USB and SD Card AFAIK).

Yep, definitely. It is a pain to get started but once its there all you need to do is update it with your new music every now and again.

You always hear people say 'but I've got 40000 tracks'. My answer to that is a) Grow up and b) select the ones you listen to the most then and stop being a nob!
