Temp issues for me as well...
« on: 13 December 2009, 10:22 »
Right, i'm confused (not that it takes a lot)...

My 1.8T is doing the usual warm (90) while stuck in traffic, but at any other time it drops right down.

I've replaced the temp sender with a brand new unit from VW and it's made no difference. The fans seem to still blow hottish (not sure how hot they should be), so I don't know what to think.

Before I go through the pain and expense of changing the thermostat, does it actually seem likely that's what the problem is? Is there anything else I should consider?

Yes, will scan for fault codes later when i get out of bed

Deffo Thermostat.

TBH it isn't such a difficult job.  Worst bit is getting to the studs holding the housing on and with some persistence you can do it without taking the alternator off.

To keep cost down you can catch the coolant and re-use it.  So it would cost £18 for gen VW thermostat or get the Neuspeed 180° one for £10.

Mine had been doing the same thing for the past six months, changed the thermostat the other week and it sits bang on 90 and the heaters now work much better.

Mine needs doing too. Sits at 90 then drops back to 80 when going down hill. Will get it done before the rolling road session!
