I did think of diesel. The GTTDI is about the same insurance as the 1.8T, but the golf S 130 PD is around £300 cheaper.

My insurance for the 1.8t is £60 cheaper than it was for the Tdi ......... £187 for the 1.8t and £240 for the Tdi

whatever your budget is, include the cost of a clutch, possibly flywheel if you intend to map a car with that many miles. You might not need it but you're going to be f*cked if you do!

Yeah that's my major worry too. As soon as I buy it I will want a remap, but then the clutch will go, that means another load of cash!

looking for something far cheaper than that + something not converted.
The conversion will seriously bump my insurance. Also tax runs out January so that would mean more further expenses and cambelt is also almost due. I was thinking in the region of £1500ish.

£1500 will get you a sh!tter.  Cambelt on Dai's motor isn't due for at least another 30K

If i had 2k to spend i'd rather have dai's.. at least you know its been looked after, and you can shout at him on here when it goes wrong i cant see why it'd be more to insure than a 1.8t? i'm sure most insurance companies base it on the car the engine has come from in the first place.
