Hi mate, just like to say that its complete rubbish the st3 being slower than the golf! I owned an st3 for a year before swapping to the gti! The focus is so much faster standard than the golf, the golf needs a remap to get it on its toes! Where as if you remap stage 1 a st3 you would still hammer the golf( i remapped mine and it was a monster) you would need a good stage 2 gti to beat a stage 1 st3! I know this because my friend had an st3 aswell and we went head to head, me stage 1 gti him stage 1 st 3, i think the engine is awsome bullet proof but  the car itself lacks in build quality to the golf and handling is much much better on the golf! I dont no what people are on about! Ide say it was a good car to have very powerful and very comfortable but ide saythe golf is a all round better car! Hense why i changed!

The ST was on my list along with the R26, Cooper S & Type R

The main thing that put me off the ST was the economy, isnt it similar to the R32?

I'd say the Golf is a better all round car!

That's usually why GTI owners pick GTI's...

After I'd looked at the facts, the ownership prospects and the intangibles of the GTI, it just seemed to make it a bit more special and an appealing prospect to own and drive... TO ME, at any rate.

Plus, I didn't grow up with an ST poster on the wall; I wanted a MKII 'big-bumper' Golf GTI  :smug:

Exactly the same list as I drew up.

I was more put off by the fit/finish of the ST and perceived image... [flame suit, on!!!! ]

MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

When it comes to looks, the GTI wins hands down. You could park the GTI outside a stately home and it looks like the owners are in.

You park the ST outside and it looks like its getting robbed.

To the OP........

whatcar.com do a car comparison tool that let's you put up to three cars side by side and deceide on pros/cons.

That was just one tool I used in making my decision.

Don't know about the ST3 but a work mate has just got himself a new Focus RS.  Have to admit that it is one beefy car.  Total in your face car and definitely not as subtle as the GTI.  I was only a passenger but it was rapid, sounded real mean and ride/handling was very good.  Just a pity that the RS does not have the same quality/luxury feel to it compared to the GTI.  Put a smile on my face though.  Made me wish that my GTI had all those qualities.

Sorry it's not relevant but just had to share it.
