erm well......
when i start car from cold in morning i take it out of the garage, lock garage up and its smells like petrol,it ticks ova on cold around 1000rpm,then when i pull off it has abit of prob
i go down to brighton quiet quickly via the a23 doing around 80ish and car is fine.if i get stuck in traffic the revs die and the car stalls.if i pull off from traffic the revs dip then there ok until i put it in 1st again where the car tries to stall and mostly does.
i went down to wiltshire at christmas and its abit of a drive so we stopped off at a service station for a fag ect, went to start the car and it took me 4 attempts to start it again.
it seems like its struggling even if the engines hot?????
only started it when i had a prob with a massive puddle and what ever we do seems like the prob doesnt go away

Hey Walkerboy,
Obviously the problem I had with my 8valve didn't start with hitting a puddle, but the symptoms your having are exactly the same as I had.
Car from cold 'hunts' a bit on idle and doesn't want to idle? Car 'bogging down' on acceleration and stalling easily when revs drop...smelling of fuel.
Car is obviously over fueling for some reason, any codes from VAG?
What solved mine was loose connections (three wires running into plug right next to Dizzy), the other thing was broken wire at connector next to coil (black square box just under wipers on right). My advice would be to check all wiring/connections as it appears a common problem for many to be bare/exposed or loose.
The other thing could be the Lamda probe, but this would show if you have it tested.
Keep in touch with progress, good luck,
Stewart

Code on dash is service reminder, check in mark 3 section to learn how to reset.
Relays slightly hidden above fuses, easy to change!
