I have spent a few hours today driving home to Leeds from Alston (which is in the middle of nowhere in the North Pennines on the road from Hexham to Penrith). I came the scenic way through Teesdale and the Dales. Very bleak. BUT.... lots of twisty roads. Proper GTi country.
Besides all the obvious stuff I now understand why I bought this car. Despite the wet conditions it was an awesome drive in the GTi. Hardly any traffic, beautiful scenery and a car in its element.
And I also now understand why I don't neccessarily need more than 210 bhp. 250 or more wouldn't have made any difference on this drive, it was all about handling and composure.
Anyone else got any favourite driving roads?

Wrynose and Hardknott Passes in the lakes, for last 20 years been fave (first go in a 1.0 metro, stunned it made it, now in GTI way too easy but still fun and one of the steepest graded roads in the UK), but for blasting along (within uk speed limits of course) was the A roads from Chester all the way down to Cardigan bay (last years hol's, sorry no idea what they were called but wow! week day so limited traffic in sumer away from school hols, bliss!)

Go to google maps and follow this trail.

Glasgow, over the Erskine bridge, head towards Loch Lomond, (old Military Rd) then take the loch Gare road to Arrocher (too many cops on the A82 loch Lomond). Then up the rest and be thankful on the way to Invarary. Stop here at the George Pub for a bite of Lunch then off again either North (left)l to Oban the back road or right over to Crianarich (Stop at the green wellie) back down to Tarbut and then Home. se to do this every weekend in the Summer (Bike Though) have also done it to the George Invarary in the car (too many Cars on a warm day)

Here are some of the rest stops and My VFR at the time

A4074 to work, oh wait... that's a bit boring being stuck in traffic

There are loads of short but good roads around here, I still have to find a long good road to drive.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Happy with carbon grey? Still looks ok when a bit dirty? I'm going for pearlescent black but I do like carbon grey? Got cloth? If so, do the grey and cloth colours live well together or a bit of a clash?

Inverness to Isle of Skye via Loch Ness.  Busy in the summer but those roads were made for a GTI

Inverness to Ullapool is good too.

+1

Weekend before last drove down to Kirkudbright using the A713 from Ayr. Really wet conditions, with lots of surface water. Very little traffic and as andykram said,  was really impressed with the composure and handling of the car, especially with the road conditions.

Still running in the engine so didn't thrash it. But overall a great drive considering the weather. Was really impressed with the DSG gearbox and it came into its own along certain stretches.
