Mk5, why change?
« on: 12 November 2009, 00:50 »
It's the best GTI ever.
The Mk6 is much the same but thousands of pounds more money.
Which makes it not so good.
Looks like we bought a winner, I'm keeping mine.

I haven't even had mine for 2 years yet.  The Mk6 isn't worth it as it doesn't really bring much new to the table.  Don't get me wrong, the Mk6 GTI is a cracking car, but it's not worth breaking the bank for when I already have a great car.

Perhaps in 2/3 years time I'll look to change and the Mk6 may be an option.  Although I'll probably wait it out for the Mk7 whenever that will be.

The mk6 is considered more of a mk5.5 in some circles - more of a facelift.

I'd rather wait for a mk7 or mk8 (preferably an "anniversary" edition).

Our friends in the MKVI section may perhaps contest that...  :lipsrsealed:

I'm unsure of what direction to go in after this (fast Audi? M3? Porker?), so I may go for MKVI or wait an additional couple of years. The GTi is the first car I've had that I've not gotten bored of after a year!

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

That's something I've been thinking about too. I recently sat in an Audi RS6 quattro. When I got back in the GTI, it felt lke I was driving an 18-year-old banger, not an 18-month-old car! Was seriously lush and something I may well think about buying in a few years.

An M3 is something else I like the look of.

But in the future, I'd still like to buy a Golf GTI as a daily driver/runabout.

Third best. Maybe fourth.

No, it dosen't bring much new to the table. However IMO the new GTI is everything the Mk5 should have been in the first place. Don't get me wrong, the Mk5 is an excellent car, just the facelift version is for me mostly better.

I test drove an R32 at a dealers (more for the laugh than anything as they rarely come up for sale here) and was hooked instantly. My next car after the 1.4 mk5 will be an R32 mk5
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

There's no point getting a MkVI if you have only had your MKV for a year or two.  I actually think the cost of the MKVI is extortionate.

I'll probably wait for the MK7 rather than "waste" my money on a MK6.

....

I've had my Mk5 GTI for over 4 years and done 76,000 miles and enjoyed every single mile. I've tested the Scirocco, the Mk6 GTI, driven and/or borrowed various other performance cars such as the new Evo X, had the latest Audi S4 Avant supercharged with all the extras for a week, but every time I get back in my albeit much modified Mk5 GTI I've yet to be disappointed.

Why change? If it works, don't mend it!
