Sorry mate, only just got ur private message, chassis number is located under the rain tray as you open the bonnet (close to the windscreen) and the vehicle identification plate should be on the offside wing near the air filter

Thanks for your help, i found it :) the VIN on the car matches the MOT certificate but as i said earlier in the check it was a Cat D write off, so can i assume the VIN has been fraudulently changed to disguise the write off? if so and i inform the DVLA can they sieze the car or make me put it through whatever test it needs to go through to get a proper MOT?

It's not unkown for computer errors with HPI checks and details. I'd apply for the V5 and see what it actually says when you get it. Car could well be a ringer but it could be legit.

Cat D aint's so bad was probably just tapped up the rear or something. Does it still have the sticker on the rear panel inside the boot? Everything look straight? If so then I wouldn't worry too much.

yeah as horney says, might be alright. Could just be that the guy u bought it off didnt want you to know it was a cat d hence saying he didnt have the logbook. I dont know too much about this situation but it could be a forged mot? Dont think they would seize the car unless it was listed as stolen and not recovered

Check the MoT history at www.motinfo.gov.uk. The very first recorded mot test listing will give you the vin number and reg at that time, the records seem to start around 2006, the reg of my car at that time was a personalised one different to the current one but the VIN matches.
If the mot is genuine against the actual VIN of your vehicle it means that it was the vehicle tested and passed, (unless the mot tester was dodgy). Sounds to me like the number plate has been swapped off another vehicle?

Thanks for the link jezza, i just checked on there and everything matches back to 2005...shame it doesnt go back further. The test centre that the car had been taken to had issued 3 fails in a row in the past 3 years on minor things really, so hopefully the tester doesnt sound dodgy. I might ring the DVLA today if i cant get hold of the person i bought it off , seee what's going on

Sounds like the number plate may have been changed at some time, sometimes the cheap data checks don't pick it up and you have to query it with them. My son is an mot tester and I spoke to him about it, if the VIN does not match the Reg No. recorded at the DVLA it is rejected and the car can not be mot'd so something must be right........?
