Should I get a 1.8T GTI?

Okay, I was here last night asking about the standard 1.8 GTI and I think we all know that I shouldn't bother with that one. So I turn to the 1.8T which I understand is a great car. Now the questions. I've been looking on Autotrader and there seems to be a few under the £3k mark but they all tend to be over the 100,000 miles marker. But on the positive note they all seem to have only 1 or 2 owners from new which obviously must mean they've been reliable cars.

I understand that I can't base my decision solely on the amount of miles it's done and there's obviously other factors such as FSH. But how does everyone find their 1.8T - any issues, problems etc?

I know I'm asking a lot of questions - and I apologise for that - but I really want to get this one right. Thanks in advance for any useful tips or advice.

hi mate, ive owned my Golf 1.8 turbo since may 2008... its been a great care for mw personally...engine wise the care is faultless aslong as you keep it well mainted and service it reguarly. Its on 99' T-reg and i bought it at 90k on the clock and its on 104k now, and still running fine... although i did have to have my gearbox replaced lol  :cry:

you just have to watch out for common faults... water leak (i have a water leak), electrical problems but these are quite general faults which you find with most cars.

Aslong as you find a clean and well maintained example you will be fine...  :smiley:

Millage isnt too much of a concern mate, my 1.8turbo octavia vrs is on 136,000 miles now and still drives perfect. Aslong as it has fsh etc then it should be ok, Just look out for dodgy rear axle bushes on the mk4 golf.

listen for any unusual noises and nocks.. and when you plant your foot make sure the turbo is pulling as its should through the rev range.. also yh the electrics are crap  :lipsrsealed:

personally i would say dont get one unless its got FSH.. if they are regulary serviced at the right times and cooled down before booting and warmed up before driving then they are donkeys will last forever  :wink:  :grin:

Nice, really appreciate your advice on this. There certainly seem to be some good ones out their with FSH and only 1 owner from new - which must be a good thing (I know if I've ever had a nightmare car in the past I just get rid of it as soon as!)

in one word "yes" ...comimg from fords and mazda's the golf is a whole different class to what i'm used to . Get the 1.8T , it will be one of the best moves you ever make , just make sure it has a good preferably full history ....

I bought a private one owner 40k (with FSH) 1.8T on a 53 plate for just over 5k in July and it is great.

Get one! :smiley:

I brought my last month on a 99 plate with 125k on the clock 5 owners and fsh, ive done nothing but  :grin: since the day a got it, so i say go for mate your not regret it lol
