I had leather in my Peugeot, and it was very hardwearing indeed.  I loved it.  I only noticed the driver's seat had split at one side about a week before I picked up the Golf.  That was 120,000 miles by the way.  And all I ever did was brush the crumbs off it.

I originally wanted leather in the Golf, for sure, but somehow the appearance of the leather in the demo car didn't exude luxury the way I'd have expected for that price.  And people here started saying stuff like the above.  And the second dealer I went to (the one I bought from) was a cloth fan, and explained about the nod to the MkI, and I liked what I saw.

Decided I really couldn't see that the leather was worth £1700 more than the cloth, to me.

Spent the budget on the DSG instead.

Don't regret a thing.

However, only time will tell how well the seats wear.  I suppose if they do get tired, a car valet with a steam cleaner will bring them up.  I had that done to my old Fiesta when the cat had been sick on it and the driver's seat was covered in pony hair and scurf, and I was amazed at how good they looked.

authenticy means go for the cloth.

Personal preferance, matey.

I like the 'nod-to-the-MKI' effect of the tartan... cloth for me! :afro:
I'm a sucka for anything retro - it gives something a bit of history of where it came from and a bit of character.
... although it does look at bit chavvish burberry. perhaps in the rest of Europe burberry doesn't have that chav feel to it.
plus i'm not minted so its just the 'basic' for me
and even the dealer was saying that 'the leather is nice but not £1700 nice'
i'm fairly sure the cloth will be fine. i just have to remember not to went my undies.

Cloth again for me. Leather as nice as it makes the cabin look and smell, its horrible in summer and silly cold in winter. not to mention your ass slides about when pushing on.

Had leather in my previous car was nice enough but suffered from all the faults above.  Saving 1,700 quid was a no brainer - spent it on ACC and Xenons :)

Have cloth on my mk5 gti.
I found in my mk6 test drive the leather seats don't feel as nice as cloth to sit in. The leather ones didn't seem to wrap around you as much as the cloth ones. Also the leather ones don't seem to be lumbar adjustable.

The mk5 cloth is also fairly kid proof, our little 2 year old has split everything on the seats \ carpet around where the car seat is ancored, and it's all washed out of the seats \ carpet with the VAX machine fine (even 3 week old ground in formula from a bottle in the carpet).

The jacara/tartan cloth is not as hard as the leather and does sink/grip  a bit more.

lol nope, regular sized not super sized.
Basically I took a Mk6 GTI with cloth trim for a spin and the seats felt great just like the Mk5 ones.

I wanted to check the leather ones out so dealer pointed me to a GTD with leather seats (he advised they're the same as the GTI). The leather ones just felt flatter and less bucket like, and didn't wrap around as much as the cloth, could be just in my head, or if the dealer was telling fibs about the GTD leather seats being the same as the GTI leather ones!
