How good is the 1.8 16v

i no this question has more than likely been on here lots of time, but how good is 1.8 16v engine? is it there to get a 2.0 16v?

It's no bad. I used to always have 8v's then got into the 16v's. Have both 1.8 and 2.0 16v's and I prefer the torque on the 2.0ltr combined with the revs of a 16v. Hence why it's going to replace mk 1.8. Not to say that the 1.8 isn't a great engine, just a bit peaky for my taste. But for it's age you can't fault it. Both make a good noise too, it's not a VR howl but sounds good in it's own way...

I've had 8v and now run a 16v. 8v's are 'easier' to drive, but you can't beat the scream and revs on a 16v!!! My valver is off the road from Monday for some much needed attention! When it comes back, it should have no injection and twin 40's for a bit of fun!!!!

the KR has to be one of vw's toughest engines.  you can thrash the hell out of them and they just keep asking for more.

very good output for its age, still not bad TBH,  by todays stds there not brilliant on fuel but there managble,  easy enough to drive but they ydo come on at 4000 rpm

What setup you going to run? Considered something similar when I do my ABF, but somewhat defeats the purpose of an EFi lump....
Had a weber on my old Driver and it sounded great, so twin 40's should sound twice as good.

On topic, the KR engine is like v-tech, happy to tootle along sub 3500k then 4k to 7500k screams it's head off, but you need to usually be a gear lower than you would need to be in an 8v just to get it in the power band. Basically you need to stir the stick to get the best from it but that just makes it more of a drivers car I think.

My Cobra did. Had that balanced to 8k.
