Just looking on ETKA and that doesn't show a difference in units and theres an external DAB unit that VW do,  but I was looking on a 2010 Golf so older units could be different??

Forgot to say the version c RNS510 2660 f/w has done away with DAB you carnt even select it in the options so I think VW have stopped doing it any way.

Probably because it spends half its time cutting out as the signal is poop!

Useful info there Darren - confirms what I'd read on vwnavi.com. So the DAB tuner used on the RCD510 is a separate module then?

The PIN diagram on my-gti is different to my one.

That diagram I linked to was for an RCD, not the RNS - maybe that's why they're different.

To be honest I hadn't realised there was more than one version of the RNS510 sat nav unit - or is it just firmware updates?

There are 3 versions so far - A, B and C.  Not sure if the hardware is different, or if its just software.  I know that my A-version is now on 2660 software - and has all the functionality of a C-version unit.  If you have an A-version unit with a hardware revision less than HW04 - then it can't take 32gb memory cards even with the latest FW - so there must be slight differences?

Not the greatest photo I know - but it was taken with my phone!
Here is my RNS510 A-version (which is currently living under my computer desk!).
The PIN diagram on my-gti is different to my one.  It still has all the connectors - apart from that No.1 - DAB aerial input... although they're in slightly different places.

Judging by this, it must mean that the DAB tuner is built into the RNS / RCD - and if this is the case, you won't be able to do a simple swap unless you buy an RNS that has DAB built in.   I'd imagine this would only be available in version C units?

I'm not convinced by the DAB anyway, as the car I test drove with it didn't get a good signal hardly anywhere!  Perhaps you should test out your one Kev before diving in and buying an RNS.  If you don't get a great signal - then swap it for a standard RNS.

Thanks P3eps, I'll give it a good test for sure.

Who remembers the good old days when you just chucked any old stereo in your car and it worked.

I think I'll give DAB a miss and worry about it if they ever actually switch off FM.

Only lost reception twice, I went around Cambuslang, East Kilbride and around Rutherglen, Parkhead in Glasgow and it was fine, really crystal clear.

I really want to keep my DAB now, unless I can get it with the RNS510 I wont change from the RCD510.
