Power Steering on a 1.3 MK2
« on: 05 October 2009, 22:41 »
Has anyone done this? What is needed? So far I think I need the rack, UJ + boot, hoses, resevoir, pump + brackets, pulley (how does this go on to a standard 1.3 MH block?), belt.

Thanks.

I'm not sure about the 1.3 specifically - but this should be *some* help.

Cheers, know what I need to get now. Just need to find out if the pump/bracket will bolt to the 1.3 block.

It wont.

You'll want golf 3 etc stuff from a 1400 or something like that combined with some changes in the pulleys and whatnot to allow fitment of later bits.

Hmm. I take it I'll need rack/UJ from a Mk2 GTI still, what mk3 bits would I need then?
cheers.

you need everything from a MK2 except the actual pump, pullies & belts, these you need from a MK3.  You can use a MK3 rack and probably the pipes/reservoir with a bit of modification if you wanted.  If you do use a MK3 rack you need to swap the track rods for mk2 items, and you'll need the MK3 UJ.

Thanks jonny. I had heard that the mk2 1.3 block wasn't tapped to take the mk2 bracket, what way does the mk3 bracket/pump go on then?
Thanks again.

the mk2 brackets are all wrong for a 1.3, as it was only fitted to 1.6+ engines which are a completly different shape. the mk3 1.4 engine is pretty much the same as the 1.3, so all the pas bits will swap over. you will need literally everything though, crank pulley, alternator, brackets etc.

i was considering doing this to my 1.3 but thought wats the point as the steering is lighter than the big block engines anyway
