I know most people here prefer the Monza Shadows, but hey!

I just don't get off that much on looking at my car's wheels - really?  get the 18's and you will
I can't see them at all when I'm driving it - but you know people will be thinking "such a shame they didn't get the 18s"
Neither can anybody else, as they're going round - that is utter rubbish - trip to specsavers for you me thinks
The whole white worm thing - had 18s on my mk5 gti and had the car for nearly 3 years - not one sign of white worm
It's not a performance issue - the 17s are every bit as fast - yes, they are supposed to be faster (but what's 0.1 of a sec?)
The 17s allegedly give a slightly smoother ride - agreed, but who cares

Are they worth an extra £400 or so?

Only you can say, but I repeat, I just don't get off that much on looking at my car's wheels while it's sitting in my driveway.

Rolfe.

worth £400?  every day of the week

My car came with 17 inch Monzas, and it looked plain as hell. I wanted one with 17s as I had a set of 18inch BBSs to go on the car already. However now I wish I'd sold the BBSs and got one with Monza Shadows instead! Too many people critisise them from just looking at photos, they look lovely in the flesh where as the 17'' Monzas just look plain.
I can understand peoples reservations about them, and their worries too as I was on the sharp end of a set of Monza IIs that needed refurbing on my mk5, but when the sunlight glints off of them there's just no comparason.
The wheelarches on the mk6 must also be a slightly different shape to the mk5s as wheels do look smaller on the mk6. There's a guy in work with a 3 door GT model that has 18s on but they look quite small. When I first saw it I had to go over and check the tyre size to make sure. You would never mistake a mk5 with 18s on.

I have the 18" Monza Shadows on mine... and I must say it looks gorgeous... Since this is my first GTI, I have had no experience with the white worms or that sort of thing but here in the Netherlands, I have noticed the white worm attacks all sorts of alloy wheels and not just the Monzas... So in my opinion, it is how one looks after your rims rather then blaming the Monzas... I try to wash my car once a week but the Dutch have equally crap weather as you folks in England... ha ha ha... I think what's the critical time would be winter when salts are being used... I think thats the No.1 cause of white worms...

Yeah, it's far from just the Monzas. A lot of VW rims have a polished lip and also the shiny bit in the VW centre caps which suffer just as badly as the Monza IIs. It's just more obvious I guess with the Monza IIs as the shiny area is much larger. Plus it tends to be enthusiasts who own GTIs rather than the company car drivers of other models who don't give a toss about its appearance or resale value.

the black looks very smart. the ickle cute red line around the outside is a nice touch, would compliment the red line on the front grill of a Mk5 or Mk6 I think

you know I always wondered if you're putting tyres on (well actually I wouldn't know cos I've never done it before and probably not likely to) if you're balancing the wheel to make sure it doesn't wobble around everywhere, where do the wheel-weights go? do they go on the back or something? or does it not need them somehow? reason i wonder is all other wheels i've seen there is the little rim that pokes out a bit and i think that is where the little weight clips on, but no such thing on these Monzas.  :undecided:
