I would steer clear of the V6 to be honest and more so the V5. I have owned one and they are so thirsty for the limited extra power they give. Yeah ok they are 4 wheel drive, but you have to drive a 1.8T like a complete loon before you need that!!

I don't know what your budget is, but if you try and find a 180bhp 1.8T GTi like mine (AUQ engine and 6 speed box) in non anniversary spec, then performance wise they are on e a par and economy wise you will be loads better off. My model came out in mid 2002 and are around for £4 - £6k....

1.8T is the best for tuning if you want, and on a day to day basis mine returns 32mpg. On a run it's 40mpg. With my 4Mo is was 23mpg around town and just 30mpg on a run. Don't get me wrong, the V6 is a good engine and the sound is nice but it gets tiresome putting so much fuel in for the privledge when a 1.8T gives the same performance. Also if the government do a u turn and decide to hike the tax up on the older models for high CO2 (and the 4Mo is one of those cars) then you could be stung for £400 a year!

Here is one...

lol well definately dnt wanna get done for £400 tax as the whole point of this is to go from a full on show car and a daily car to one single car that looks good but used daily lol.. just been on youtube listening to some of the 1.8t's and imo they do sound ok. Whats the turbo like on a daily basis are they reliable etc as thats my main reason for no tuning as i want 100% reliability so would say a 200bhp turbo be as reliable as a standard v6

Search the forum mate for reliabilty threads as it's been done to death but the 1.8T engine is pretty much bullet proof. As long as it's been serviced correctly then it should be fine. The earlier turbos have been known to fail, but it is a bit of pot luck as some cars fail and others don't. The later model, 2001 on roughly, had the K03S turbo and drive by wire, and these are the better engines.

Mine has been mapped for a year and no problems with it and the same can be said I think for all the 1.8T's that have been mapped by R-Tech....

yeah will search just asked now as im getting quick responses lol.. but see the turbo failures is what ive heard of elsewhere which is what puts me off on the 1.8t well that and the fact that most are 100k+ miles because as said im kinda after a bullet proof car lol thanks for the advice though
