Thats just it the VAG 2.0tsfi (fsi) engine does sound like a diesel on start up... all most to the point of being embarassing :embarassed:

So does the 1.8T...my S3 sounded like a tractor on start up.
But, no matter how bad you 'think' it sounds, it doesn't actually sound as bad as a 1.9 PD...I can assure you.

I thought the newer 2.0 TDIs were better?
The 170 PD certainly is, as is the 170 CR.

Can't see me wanting another TDI either though...just too damn noisy.

Their demo cars sound much meatier but they said it's because they get thrashed whenever they get taken out.

A good excuse to avoid demonstrators!

I am beginning to wonder from reading this post if each car isn't tuned differently (although I can't see why VW would do this).

Why should they?  All EU-specific GTIs, be they left or right hookers, will have an identical state of tune.  The only differences regarding the actual sound they make is simply down to how they are run.  Most direct injection petrol engines seem to run rich, and if you drive it like an old granny, then the exhaust silencers will get clogged up with soot.  But give em a good blast, and they will sound different.
