Not quite perfect...

My 12-year-old Peugeot has a dashboard display that tells you how long until your next service every time you turn on the engine, and a permanent warning signal (a little spanner!) that stays on once you're within 500 miles.

I gather there are two different service schedules depending on how you use the GTi, but once you've got that sorted, I'd be well disappointed if it doesn't have something at least as spiffy.

On the Mk6 if you have the highline dash then go to the settings menu- scroll down until you see service, there should then be a subsection -I think it says 'info'  highlight this and it should tell you how long to next service.

These is also a reset function there as well, but will always change   back to time and distance

Is this based on how you drive, or is it a glorified stopwatch? :p

If set to time/distance then yes its just a stopwatch.

On longlife then driving style journey lengths cold starts etc are all taken into acount and the service interval adjusted accordingly.

With the GTI you are best getting an oil change every 10,000 anyway and using L/Life oil

Can anyone confirm this point:
21.   If there is no top up oil in a little bag in the boot ask for some.

It's nothing but I like these small gadgets (the bag!)

I didnt get any with the MK5.. but yes there should be some! you should check your oil reg too, as new engines tend to use that little bit more.

With VW, you generally only get the oil top up if you are on LL servicing.  For T&D, you have to buy your own!

Is there any way I can check this TT? i can recall some thing that you can do to check how long you have left for your service can you not??

Sit in car > turn on ignition and wait for usual warning lights to go out > put on seat belt (or wait for the seat belt reminder warning to go off) > press and HOLD, for at least 2 seconds the 00 trip reset button (your trip will initially change to 000.0, but then revert back to its previous miles, providing you keep the button held down) > et voila!

You should see both miles and days due to next serv.  If the days are more than 365, or the miles are more than 9,700 - then it has been set for LL! 

If they HAVE set it for LL, and can't/won't set it to T&D, then you can do this yourself!

Yes but thats for the mk5 on the mk6 if you have highline dash the service info can be found in the settings menu.
