i wouldn't touch any single point injection engine from previous experience.
the dual injections give it a bit more life in terms of responsiveness and they seem to rev a bit happier, but there still as slow
and i wouldn't bother with the 1.6, as the performance is very often undistinguishable to a 1.4.
The one to get, and keep the insurance down a bit while adding performance that you should be able to add to is the 1.6 16V, but this are pretty rare, and apparently are liable to break down
