Driveshaft outer boot replacement
« on: 15 August 2009, 17:10 »
Can this be done without removing the whole driveshaft. Car is a Mk3 16v.

Read a write up for Mk2 and it was possible without removing the whole driveshaft.

Thanks

Paul

You should be fine, Paul.

With one caveat.

That the shaft's been out of the hub before.

It seems that the 5-stud cars had the shafts basically glued into the hub.  Danny and I have stripped two 5-stud cars where we've needed to beat the end of the CV with a sledgehammer many times before the little cocksucker would actually let go.

If it IS still glued, you will need access to a GOOD press and have the hub and assembly off to push out the shaft - they're that well in there.

You know the trick with the jack and trackrod end?  Remove nut, take weight with the jack on the end of the clear thread, then belt the outside of the arm - the shock under tension releases the track rod end without all the shag and hassle normally associated with these joints.

If you want a spare set of shafts I have a pair on the shelf here - could do with unloading them prior to moving back to the IOW.  Want a spare gearbox, too?  Both are in Filton and will be cheap cheap... I have a set of complete 288mm uprights, too.....
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

it dose seem that way,   the last car in particular was a absolute barsteward to get the joints out of the hubs.   spent quite a while beating the merry hell out of them
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I've done this job a few times on mk3's. I needed a puller to remove it from the hub.

Cheers for the info, sounds like a PITA job.

Will get it done by the garage, got a trackday in a few days so can't afford to get stuck doing this job.

DH How much do you want for the driveshafts and gearbox?

Thanks again for the info.

I know this is a bit late, but dont try to beat the end of the driveshaft out of the hub to much, they mushroom out quite easily.
Learnt this the hard way recently, working on my dads mondeo... In the end I had to cut half inch off the end to get some decent thread to put the nut back onto.
Cheers, Tony.

Thanks - I got the garage to do it for me. They had to press the driveshaft out with a press. As suspected it seemed to be bonded in and had obviously not been taken out before.
Not too bad cost wise £50

There is a specific hub puller for the job, i can't remember which, but my mate has got it.
I've done a few mk3's, and i'm not sure why, but the splines seem to jam up when you try to remove it from the hub
