Removing GTI sideskirts
« on: 28 July 2009, 15:42 »
Sorry for asking what seems a very newb question but just a quick query.

How do the skirts on a GTI come off? They look to be riveted on behind the jacking point covers? Can I pull these out or do they need to be drilled? Just want to check before I break the trim.

Cheers

Very carefully pulled off if I remember correctly. I did this during my rebuild about 18 months ago.

Cheers - so just prise it off carefully? I'm not bothered about the skirt on there at the mo as it's cracked and I have a new one to go on but didn't know if there would be any clips etc on the car I may break. What about the rivets?

Lovely Mk2 by the way, bookmarked the thread to have a proper read through somewhen.

Yep on mine was 2 large self tapping screws under the jacking point covers. Sadly I think most of my clips have snapped so it just fell off.

Yup, that brings back memories. I forgot about those. But TBH, have a good look around on anything you are about to take apart before you actually start the task. Or it could start getting expensive.

Ta for all advice. Put the new one on today. About 5 clips, 2 screws and 2 pain in the arse rivets that are in the sill. Most of the clips had to be fixed but it's now on

Use if I remember right a 3.5 or a 4mm metal drill bit.

Carefully drill through the rivets so the head pops off but also completely seperates/weakens the rivet so it will push out the other side. minding the paintwork!

purchase new replacement rivets from vw. They are 36p each.

Its a doddle, just remember the two scrws like everyone else also mentioned
