I was going to specify the 510 on mine as the test drive car had it. However, in the end, after the salesman had showed me through the features of a 310 I thought I couldn't justify the extra money as the 310 does exactly the same, just in mono rather than pretty colours.
More importantly I can't imaging it being worth a penny extra come selling time.

Remember the 510 is also a 6 disc cd changer and can read from a memory card so not sure where the salesman was coming from in that one.

Hardly ever used the 6-disc CD changer I had with my Peugeot (I didn't order it, it just came like that).  At the time I was quite pleased to have got an extra I hadn't ordered, but having to load it up in advance before setting off took all the fun out of it, and I kept putting the discs in back to front as well.

Now, I've got whatever music I want on my iPod, I just want to be able to plug that in and I'm happy.

I agree with you its probably an extra I'll hardly use, although my kids can now have all their music on 6xCD's in MP3 format, I'll have mine on the i touch and my wife can use her memory card. No more faffing about!!

I just thought it strange the salesman didn't relay these differences over the 310 to let the customer decide.

He did tell me about the autochanger and the memory card functions. I knew about them anyway from the price list and brochure. However, as is stated above I have an ipod. This made the 6CD in my previous car totally redundant when I got it and would do the same in the GTi. The salesman gave me a free ipod cable andI was away - job's a good 'un. Just stick the ipod in the under arm rest storage hole and leave it to play. I've got track details on the 310 and artist track and album on the dashboard display if I want it. Perfect. All of this applies to the memory card feature too.
What I'd have paid for a 510 I could buy a really nice Tom Tom which has a Bluetooth phone system (£200 or so) and I've saved £200 or so on the price of the 510, £300 or so on the price of hands free phone installment and £gazillions on the price of installed sat nav. Bit of a no brainer in my opinion.

He gave you a free cable? I was under the impression this should be included!!! Do I need to order one?

Cable is not included, you need to ask for it - you'll get it free but make sure you specify and they'll have it ready for you when you pick up your car.

You get the USB one in the car. The ipod one is £15 or so according to the price brochure. Suffice to say there was no chance of me paying that having paid that much for the car!!!

I agree that the RCD310 does not look as good as the RNS310 though... it looks great in my car... and it compliments everything else on the dashboard especially at night. And I dont think paying a few hundred quids justifies the upgrade to RCD510.
