Bent rack. ideas??
« on: 26 July 2009, 19:10 »
Sister bashed her golf, not her fault your honour.
Anyway rather than f**k about with insurance companys stealing excess. trying to get it sorted asap.
Porta powered the inner wing damage, bumper mount etc.
Wishbone was f**ked, so the rubbing the police reported was the driveshaft rubbing the shell.
New wishbone latter all is ok, apart from tracking being well out due to end of rack being bent.
Before i try anyone ever bent one and had luck giving it bit of persuassion with heat.
I know racks aren't too dear, but rather not spend cash if not required.
Also do mk2 ones fit? all gti ones are PAS i assume on mk3s, her's isn't
So is there any better ratio racks out there if does have to be replaced?

I dont think a mk2 one will fit. As the mk3 is wider track than the mk3. If its a non pas rack then it shouldnt cost the earth.

Would advise looking in the for sale section at the cars that are being broken. You could probably get a whole set up for next to nothing in fine order.

If you hit the bumper bracket, has it pushed the chassis leg at all?

broke one spotweld off, luckily only distorted a tiny bit, closed up with clamp and given good dose with the old welder.

Currently it drives like a pig. i think i'd love some steels on it as wheels are terrible too, front must be oval. no one ever seems to sell steels, just lose them down bottom of their garden or something

the mk2 rack will fit the mk3 (just make sure you get the steering joint as well)- the racks are the same width, the extra width comes from the track rods, so you'll still need to buy new mk3 rods to make it work

just buy a new track rod and fit it to the rack, they're not expensive

Also, if an MOT tester sees evidence of heating of or around steering/suspension components, he'll fail it...
