Not happy with HIC at all...
« on: 24 July 2009, 09:34 »
Back in Feb I renewed my policy with HIC with them price matching a quote from Admiral I had received.

Just had a look on my policy and I am NOT covered to drive anyone elses car. I've just phoned to ask why this is and apparently this company that matched Admirals price doesn't cover driving other cars TPF&T.

I'm 30 years old with full no claims FFS.

I've been told I should have been informed of this when I got the quote from HIC which I didn't, I would never have taken the policy out if I had been. This now leaves me stuck with a policy that doesn't cover me for everything I need. I could cancel my policy but I would have to pay to do so and also pay again for a new policy. I don't see why I should be out of pocket for someone elses cock up. Needless to say I won't be renewing with HIC next year.

So a word of warning for you, if you get a like for like quote for a price match from HIC make sure it is like for like and everything is there that you need.

And to be fair to HIC they always say to check your policy documents and notify them of any mistakes within the 14 day cooling off period.

3rd party cover on other cars is less common now than it used to be on a lot of policies. I always ask and I always check.

like for like means like for like, not check just in case what we have sold you isn't what you want. It was even admitted that I should have been told that I wouldn't have that cover when I was given the quote, which I wasn't.

I can't get it added as the company doesn't give that type of cover. Like I said I can cancel and start a new policy but I'd have to pay to cancel AND pay to start a new policy which is money I don't have. As I told the lady on the phone, either way, I'm stuffed

Like Nick said to be fair to HIC you should have checked the policy within the cool off period.
Also did they have the full quote from Admiral in front of them or did you tell them exactly what you wanted (and pointed out the fully comp on driving 3rd parties cars)?

I'd have a good go at them for not giving you a true like for like quote if they knew all the extras you would have got with Admiral (especially if you pointed out that you wanted Fully Comp on driving other peoples cars) and probably demand some money back as it was not a true like for like quote and they have miss sold you the product or if they want you to stay with them next year they'll give you a better discount  (Misselling a product is bad practice and if the Financial Watch Dog were to find out... oh dear.... )  They may resist, but like the Borg say...

Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

My main gripe was the fact it was confirmed that I SHOULD have been told that it didn't cover driving other cars. Anyways not a lot I can do about it now, just make sure you all check that a like for like match does what it says on the tin

If you play your face a bit saying you will not be using them again and you will be cancelling, they will at least sort your out with some sorrt of discount as they wont want to lose your business.

BUT............ YOU should have checked the policy documents mate
