knocking noise from rear- 8v gti

Hi. Seems to be unrelated to engine speed, but starts almost as soon as I pull away. Had it on a ramp and wiggled the exhaust- doesn't seem to be knocking anywhere.
Is it the suspension - again I've tried pushing the back of the car up and down when stationary and no noises again.
Is there some lubricating I need to do on the chassis?

Axle bushes, wheel bearings?

I would say EITHER the rear beam bushes, or the top mounts.

Mine does this, and its the rear beam bushes.

Is the car lowered? I lowered mine to the floor, changed the top mounts, and left the really old tired rear beam mounts as is, and it didnt take long to ruin them.

Exhaust been checked and not fouling. Sounds like the rear mounts then- how do I check, replace and if garage fixed - about what cost is it likely to be?
Also what's the danger if not fixed?

Engine mount fatigue can cause exhaust to hit if beam and top mount bushes are ok
