Car wont go above 40mph (at a push)!!!
« on: 19 July 2009, 14:10 »
Can anyone help?

I have a 1.8GL Golf MK3 and I am getting a problem when driving.

The car doesnt want to rev over about 3000 rpms and I cant it to go any faster than about 40mph.

It ticks over fine when idling but is a pain to drive, even though it will drive.  Could it be a sensor, ECU etc etc and does anyone know how to check these bits out with a multimeter?

HELP I AM GOING MENTAL!!!!

Does it get to 3000rpm quickly? then just stop there?

Or does it pull away really slow, and just not get any higher than about 3k? If its that, then clutch? Gearbox?

If it gets to 3k and no further quickly? Not sure if it could be timing related.

How responsive is it when you rev it when the car is stationary and out of gear?

After some fiddling I have noticed that the rubber/metal plate between the carb and inlet had a great big split around it.  I would imagine this isnt helping at all.  Wouldnt this confuse the management system because too much unmetered air is getting in?

Anyone know how much these are from our friends at the main dealers because I cant imagine they do an aftermarket one.

try euro car parts, or gsf. Dealers will charge double.

Yes it definately will make it run s**t if its drawing air between carb and engine. Mixture will be weak (to much air not enough petrol)

My dad bought a carb flange for his 1.8GL from Euro Car parts. Was a long time ago now so can't remember the cost. Just remember driving all the way to Colchester to get it lol.

Well I have been busy today.  Infact it would be fair to say too busy.

I bought the carb gasket flange from eurocarparts for a cost of £25.

I also noticed that the catalytic converter was making rattling noises, so this was bought at the same time.

I even treated the car to a timing belt.

Anyway, what a nightmare I am having removing the exhaust manifold nuts.  I broke the stud on the first one, had to beat an 11mm socket over another because it rounded and now I am totally f**ked trying to get the last one out.  You probably asking why am I removing the manifold...............answer is simple................I broke the stud on the manifold plate where the cat connects to.

If any of you can cheer me up, because I am kinda thinking of torching the damn thing.
