Ready for takeoff!
« on: 12 July 2009, 08:59 »
Hi there,

My GTi has in just the last week started making quite excessive Fan noise. Its a bit odd as i have never even heard the fan before but now after about 30 seconds of driving even from cool the (large) fan kicks in and is noisy enough that its clearly audible in the cabin.

It seems to only happen with the aircon running, do you think there is an issue with the fan or perhaps the aircon system, perhaps it needs re-charging?

Initilally i thought it might be the hotter weather but it happened even when it was 15 degrees outside te other day, I did do a search under fan/fan noise but only came up with one post that didnt help,

Cheers,

R

Think you might want to search harder, its a common problem

The A/C uses the little fan when its running, but when this fails the larger fan has to kick in and this is why you are hearing it all of a sudden.  Unfortunately it means a new set of fans...

The same problem affected mk4's and with those the problems wasn't the actual fans themselves but was the control module...which was integrated into the fans.  Have a look through that section as I recall there was a ghetto fix that involved some butchery and soldering some new resistors into place if you feel up to it.  Of course the problem might be slightly different with the mk5 fans.
