1.8 20v T - Oil Consumption
« on: 08 July 2009, 12:37 »
Hi, just checked the oil on my 108 K gti turbo and noticed that it has used a drop of oil to be precise the level now sits at about half way down the dip stick (between full and empty) not really noticed it using any before, having said that it has been remapped and been worked pretty hard of late, as I live on Isle Of Man where some roads are deristricted...ie no speed limit !!!!
Any one had any experience of oil consumption, as I stated its done 108,000 miles with a good VAG history, ive not noticed any oily smells, or fumes / smoke ?
Cheers

Hey Fella...you on here again !!! LOL To be honest it was last serviced back in February, but I do check oil on a regular basis, its dropped this amount over the last couple of weeks or so, as I said though, its been hammered a bit of late, mostly showing the lads the benefits of an R Tech remap !!!

sounds about normal then mate - if you look at your handbook it will say that it can consume upto 1 litre per 1000km!!!

how many miles have you done since then out of interest?? if you're doing shortish journeys then you'll use a little more oil than if doing mainly cruising etc

I would say about 500 miles in the last month mostly short runs as the Isle of Man is a small place !! I note in the handbook expected oil consumption, but as I said, it has not used any before, I just presumed it may be due to thrashing it perhaps more than I would usually & hoped it was not showing signs of turbo / ring wear ? saying that the car runs fine and pulls like a train and most importantly does not smoke, yesterday I tried going down a long hill with in 3rd gear with engine braking, I put my foot down after a minute or so at fairly high revs and did not see a wisp of smoke, usually that would point out valve stem seal trouble ? probably best just keeping my eye on it ?
Cheers

I meant mileage since it was last serviced

just keep an eye on it - if you've been thrashing it then you will use a little bit of oil

as long as you do the normal things like allowing the car to fully warm up and cool down then it shouldn't use an excessive amount of oil in between services.

just an example my TDi hasn't used a drop of oil in between the last two services; and thats remapped

My 1.8T rarely uses any oil - though VW do state that it is normal for  turbocharged engines to use some oil.

Im sure it fine just keep an eye on it
