Lumpy idle.
« on: 30 June 2009, 18:54 »

Just changed the PCV valve but doesn'y seem to have resolved my lumpy idle which fluctuates from 750rpm up to 1500rpm

Any other ideas, had it scanned by VW computer and the fault codes seemed to match this part failure..

Cheers Sam

What was the code and is the car down on power?

My car had exactly the same symptoms to yours last Thursday.  Pulled off the motorway and the engine sounded rough.  Got to work and made sure that the oil cap was sitting home ok and the pipes were all connected.  Started the car up and the revs went from 750 and slowly rose to 1500 then back to 750 then to 1500 then to 750.......all without touching the accelerator.

Took it to a VW garage who did a diagnostic on it and came back with a failed recirculating valve.  Think the price of one was around £17 and gasket was £2.  They wanted to charge me an hours labour to put it in and 1/2 hrs labour for the diagnostic.  Luckily I had taken out a Tesco car warranty plan as my car is over 3yrs old and that paid for everything.  The car feels like new and goes like a rocket.  Mine must have been going for a while so I was used to the loss of power, but now.......OMG!!!

I suspect a "recirculating valve" you refer to is a DV that is prone to tearing...

Cheers for all the quick replies, feel like hitting with a lump hammer at the moment.

Recirculating valve is another part i was going to replace as a matter of course anyway due to the known issue.. car feel's like it should have more power for 200bhp but as i've only had it for a week I was unsure. Seem's to go alright in low rev's but doesn't pull well in the higher rev range so sounds like it may be the cause.

Anyone changed one? I've got an early type where i've heard there in a differant place i;e right on the turbo?

Also what do people reccommend, forge, revised VW or I saw something about the TSI version off a later model on mk5golfgti.co.uk?

Cheers, Sam

The latest version for the TSI engine apparently works with the FSI engine. This would be your cheapest option.
