Even with the bottle opener the cup holders arn't a patch on the mk4 ones    I wouldn't trust driving anywhere with a cup of anything.  I think the non armrest ones are better?

Oh yeah, the MK4 ones where brilliant.

The ones in the rear of our MK5s are similar / the same to what the MK4 had in the front which is why I use them as they are pretty sturdy.

I like the A3 cup holder which pops out of the dash. It is even located under the air vent so that your beverage gets some air con air to help keep it cool.

Without the Bottle Opener there's no effective cup holder 

+1. I don't use it to open bottles, more to secure my can of red bull.
