If you cant afford to spend money, then chuff is right. For the same cash you could get a Mk2 16v. Wouldnt bother going for the mk2 8v, as its negotiable difference in power really... But the handling would be better.

Modifying a mk3 8v ENGINE is a bit of a waste unless its a supercharger in my eyes.

cheers for the advise ,i swapped a mk 2 16v 165bhp for my new mk3 I got the mk3 and cash wasnt a bad deal but i really miss the power of a 16v mk2 .I also had a 1997 mk3 16v a great car again the power differance is unreal the 8v are really poor performance wise .for the money it cost to tax and put petrol into a 2.0l engine it doesnt make sence.

Fair point mate but unfortunately there just aint enough 16vs to go round so us poor people will just need to put up with our 8v

not going to go on but you really should have read up on the 8v's or asked what people thought about the exchange before you went ahead with it but am sure you wont make a mistake like that again . hope you find a 16v soon

good luck Nic

My decision was purely financial. I wanted a mk3 gti could not afford a 16v or a vr6 so got an 8v. If I get a small windfall I would however consider selling my 8v and buying a 16v. In the end everything comes down to money. I would have a farrari if I could afford 1

If you went a 16v buy a mk2, mk3 16v is not much quicker than an 8v.
