Have you thought about Falken FK452's?  They have rave reviews from loads of forums (and me) and are simply outstanding value for money.  Wear seems to be average but the grip is outstanding for any money let alone what they are selling for.

For some reason the 18's are cheaper than the 17 so an added bonus for you.

I'd love to hear a comparison of the much loved goodyears vs the falkens from someone who's had both.  I'm willing to bet there is nothing in it / Falkens come out on top considering the coin.

you saying the Goodyear EF1's asymetrics are actually okay and as likely to cover 15k+   I need some new fronts and the ones I have on are a temporary measure.  I thought the Michelin's or the Conti's were the preferred choice unless wanting total performance everyday?

im saying they are ok yes, not sure about the 15k mileage though, i used to do alot of driving around mid wales,south wales and somerset on varied roads and found them to be really good!

so here's mine

i ran the GSD3's (albeit on 16's but still) and pound for pound they are FAR better than the Falkens both in the dry and wet

I find the Falkens lack feedback and the car constantly feels like its on marbles - not at all confidence inspiring!!  The Falkens are also noisier and the rate at which they are wearing is quite alarming!! I'm down to 5mm on the fronts after just over 4K!! Considering i got around 6K from the Goodyears thats quite a big difference in my book

dont get me wrong, i've run the Goodyear gsd2/3's in 15" and 17" form on my mk3 and the mk2 had them in 16" and as a full on performance tyre they are just sensational, the question for me is the longevity as I have a nipper these days and don't wanna be forking out every 8-10k...that'd be a set of tyres every 8-10 months.

The old Continental Extreme were just as execeptional but the mileage was double that of the gsd3's imo but are no longer made...its that kinda tyre that i'm after

Hmm that is interesting.  Pretty shocked by that to be honest.  I find them really really planted and seem to dig into corners.  That said my only point of reference is Michelin Primacy's (completely different tyre - very good for mile munching - not so good at cornering) and the piss poor Dunlops sportmaxx.  Maybe thats skewed my opinion of them somewhat but I'm really surprised you say the car feels like its on marbles and don't inspire confidence.

it might work differently on your MK5 - don't forget the MK4 is a far inferior chassis so that might have something to do with it 

either way the tyres certainly don't 'dig in'    you've got to be really committed to throw it into a corner and hope it will stick - in all fairness the tyres will stick (eventually) but they run out of talent very quickly

I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Assyms on my 19" alloys and Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's Assyms on the 18" alloys. TBH there isn't a great deal in it. I'd actually say the Vred's are better in the dry and the F1's slightly better in the wet. Tyre wear I have heard is a little better on the F1's too.

Do not buy the Falkens after having the F1's the Falkens are no match, they have less grip in the dry and wet, are nosier and wear quicker.
I've started shopping for new front tyres now, my 3rd set since November
