I've often been a victim of carpark ignoramouses(sp) too.
I now tend to park over two spaces in free car parks. Get plenty of dirty looks but I'm sure those who glare at me wouldn't be rushing to give me £40 every time I get a sodding dent.
I acquired a strange one last year, still have it on my drivers door. Parked my car up in a big gap on the seafront, side on against the kerb, went off to have a walk/shopping, got back and found a nice dent in my door. The only thing I could think of that could have done it was one of those tractor train thingys that provides extortionately priced rides up and down the sea front for kids/fatties/old people. Must have pulled up to let some passengers off and one of them must have opened their door right onto my car.

I was once venting my spleen about why people insist on parking near my car in an emptyish car park one day at a family get together and my brother in law came up with the reason why this happens: He said '' I often park next to another car as it gives me something to line up against as I reverse into the space'' Aaaaaaarrrrgh!!!!!
