mk3 newbie with a few problems.....

Im dave for those of you who know me your probally thinking what the hell are you doing in the mk3 section.

Well ive just bought 1... Ive only ever had  mk2 8 valves and fancyed a change after a couple of years of missery driving cheap mk2's....

Just bought an 8v mk3 gti of ebay and ive got a few issues.

1st... of all ive its got a very load sort of clicky noise when ever im reversing all forward gears are fine except for a little play in the gear shift.
im thinking the worst at the moment as i haven't yet give it a good look.

Im thinking its either passenger side cv,

release bearing or at worst the gearbox but it goes in gear with no problem no clunks or crunching.

2nd... rear passenger brakes are making a horible grinding noise for the first few miles.  The discs and pads are ok and dont seem to be the problem..

3rd....The car has stopped and died a few times at lights etc but fires up again...

4th.....clocks freeze when its turned of it still shows temp fuel etc and the clock resets itselfs all the time.

5th....my car has got electric windows all round but the drivers door also has  a manual handle aswell, when i hit the button the window doesnt move and a noise can be herd from the passenger door.

anyone got any ideas what these issues are.

1st  - Probably is a CV joint like you mention or rear syncromesh maybe, i know these are a fairly common problem on higher mileage Mk3's. Sloppy gear changes will more than likely be down to worn linkages, another common yet cheap and easily rectified problem.

2nd - I've just acquired the same problem with my passenger side rear brake after changing my discs, pads and bearings last week...Humph.  :angry:

3rd - Oh god here we go.....how many threads do you fancy reading on this MK3 Golf matter????

4th - haven't a foggiest clue on this one mate apart from it sounds like you might need new clocks.

5th - Another common MK3 problem, the window regulators are crap on these although I'm baffled as to why the hell you've got a manual winder handle on an electrically operated regulator? Somebody has clearly being botching here...

im baffled about the window aswell why would there be a manual and electric...thing is tho it all looks like it came out of the factory like its some sort of weird thing vw done or something i havnt had the door panel of yet to look as i only got it on wednesday but its crazy...

Most likely a non electric window car that's had them retro-fitted, would coincide with the switches being wired up wrong, or less likely someones's drop the ball when replacing a doorcard, more likely a retro fit though.

problem number 3.... mines done that aswell afew times, I've noticed at idle when engine is warm revs are at 800rpm... and if i use alot of electrical power (lights, fans, radio etc) and dip the clutch at the lights, i notice my rev counter drop to bout 500rpm then jump back to 800 again... I'm thinkin it might be either something to do with the throttle body (either clean it or vacum pipes) or the idle valve might be abit dodgy.. I always thought at idle in a warm engine revs should be at 900 - 1000..... but i may be wrong   :undecided:

Hi Just thought I might be able to shed some light to the clicking noise in reverse, I last week bought a mk3 8v gti and was conned (Ebay Again ) mine had also loud clicking in reverse. This I have had looked at and is the reverse gear teeth chipped, this is a common fault by people selecting reverse whilst still going forward so long as the broken peice of the tooth is collected by the gearbox drainage magnet it should be fine. I have how ever decided to change the gearbox (this weekend) there is a guy in the classified ads breaking a 8v and wants 100 for a gearbox he had reconditioned 4 months ago he is in Burnley area and can arrange del at cost

no1. I guess either cv joint or worn hub (check both) I know the 8v boxes are poor but I would expect other issues if that was past it!! and if both check out fine try some new gear oil (synthetic is best as this makes miracles occur on the 020 boxes)

no2. Handbrake cable is seized (or the handbrake mech on the caliper) try the cable first as theres a rubber boot that splits and water gets in corroding the inner cable

no3. clean throttle body, check breather hoses and check the thread posted

no4. check the connector on the rear of the clocks..its not unknown for these to come loose

no5. Its had a dodgy regulator and they are expensive new, so i guess someones fitted a manual one and bodged it to work!!

right you guys have been really good but its alll sort of what i was thinking but tomorrow im gonna jack it up, whip the wheels of and see whats what.
Getting back to boneybradys reply tho

hand brake light is on all the time ive checked the oil and all is well...... so i think your right about the sticky hand break cable.

the clocks work fine speedo,revs,lights etc its just when i turn the engine of and take the key out it still shows the temp gauge at normal, you know half way. and it still shows how much fuel is in the tank.  I know alot of cars still show the fuel when of but my mk2's never and im pretty sure the mk3's dont either.

back to the door thing it seems a lot of trouble to go to to fit a manual winder with all the electrics in place etc...he would of had to fit the winder and new glass mount aswell.
me and my mate are just chatting about it now we think it was vw fitted and the switch in the drivers door is for the passenger window like on all cars the drivers side has 2 for each of the front windows.  I say this because of the noise the passenger door makes when pushe :undecided:
