Met up last night to try and match some keys up using VACCOM, however the car refussed to recognise the "new" key, however the new key is a later 3 button (which i think was 2003+) and the car's a 2001, i think this is the problem that the key isn't right for the car.

I forgot to check that they were the same frequency either.

below is a screen shot of the cluster, if someone can identify what immob it is and any suggestions for key matching.

New style key remote replacement for 1999.5 – early 01 models
For those who are using the old style key and wish to switch using the new style ones, please note that there are two different versions of the new style keys out there with different part #s. Both versions of the new style keys look exactly identical, but only one of them works with cars that originally came with the old style keys. For reference, the following are the part #s of all switchblade remotes for the mk4s:

Old style:
1J0 959 753 F -- (for immobilizer 2)

New style:
1J0 959 753 T -- (for immobilizer 2)
1J0 959 753 AM -- (for immobilizer 3)

If you’re sure that your car originally came with the old style keys, then you would know that your car is equipped with immobilizer 2 (except 1999.5 models which are not immobilizer equipped). So to switch using a new style key, the one with part # 1J0 959 753 T would be the right one you need, since it works with immobilizer 2 equipped mk4s (as well as the immobilizer unequipped 1999.5 models). I learned all of these the hard way when I was trying to get a new style key to work with my Jetta, and wasted some $$$ in the process, so make sure you have the right key with the right part # before doing any programming

Have a read through this thread:

If the "new" key was second hand and was previously matched to an immo3 car then it won't work as the immo3 immobiliser chip is write once.

Cheers for Neil!

apparently the key was new from vagproducts, do you know if an Immo3 key can be coded to a immo2 cluster assuming the key is new?

I got this key remote type:  HLO 1JO 959 753 N

This and key HLO 1JO 959 753 A are compatible with the VAG products key (HLO 1JO 959 753 P) apparently but only for 1997-2000 models.

The immobiliser chip is the same on immo2 and 3 as far as I amaware so it should code to the car, try setting the number of keys to 0 first to clear out existing matchings then recoding all the keys.

You do have the SKC don't you?

The Frequency is for the top part of the key that opperates the central locking, as long as the frequency is the same you should be OK.
