Modifying an earrrrrrly mk2.
« on: 02 June 2009, 04:20 »
This is the baby, looking a bit worse for wear and could do with a resto in the next couple of years:

It no longer has the Mims on it, but I have fitted 15" P-slots rather than the 14", and have since fitted a tow bar
It needs the front struts looking at as these's a bit of play in them (so lowering might be an option), and I also have a complete G60 brake set-up doing nothing in my garage, but I'm thinking is this overkill on an 8v? If I fit them it would tempt me to get a bit more power from the engine (maybe a mk3 bottom end - 150bhp or so I've been told, or perhaps a vr6 even?).

But then I think, should I just get a later model gti as these conversions would be easier on a valver, and it wouldn't spoil the originality of mine. After all, this particular car was sold only two weeks after they came out!

Or would these brake/suspension mods be subtle enough not to spoil the car and be ok to do?

I'm really in two minds on this, and I know its mine and can do whatever I like, but I could do with some opinions here.

Over to you.......

But the exhaust is gangsta innit! Ok, that's off.

And I fitted the tow bar for the trailer tent........ Oh god, am I that old?!

Standard looking on a early one to be honest, not many A reg's left now.

I would say kep it standard looking (15" P slots are a result there!) and then subtle tweaks to make it go well but look original. Drop 40 or 60 would be sweet and the G60 brakes will be worthwhile if they clear the P slots. If not get a 16v set up.

Engine wise I would say avoid VR6 but an ABF 16v running the Kjet would be awesome and look original as well as being easy to return it to standard if the need ever arised.

Yes but harder to return to standard if you wanted or needed to.
