MK4 curse got me...........
« on: 17 May 2009, 18:24 »
didn't end up on a recovery truck though

went back to Pembrokeshire for the weekend for my mum's birthday.

Went our Friday morning, on the way back, planted my foot at 30mph in 3rd gear to go up a hill which was swiftly followed by a loud BANG / POP

oh great - my first reaction was i'd bottomed out as the road dipped before the hill started then i looked back to see huge plumes of black smoke.  Joy - i've popped a pipe

recovered to the side of the road to find my intercooler hose had popped off at the EGR valve - now worries i'll just re-attach it.   Thats when i encountered a problem - the lug on the hose had SMASHED the EGR casing leaving a nice hole in it

luckily (or unluckily) the nearest dealer was only 1/2 mile away so went in and ordered a new EGR valve - that will be £161.  Plus fitting as i had no tools

Booked it in for Saturday morning - £197 lighter for the experience

Never mind - 4 wheel alignment and setup tomorrow and cambelt and water pump end of the month

not wrong lol

got to say - fair play to VW Sinclair in Neyland - gave me 10% off the EGR valve and billed me for the exact amount of time the bloke spent on it   so whilst it was an expensive repair it could have been alot more expensive!!

gave the new connection a good test on the way home this afternoon

and clealry i need even stronger cable ties

cheers Ridg

unfortunately that wouldn't have helped as the spring clip went AWOL and i can't see a way of securing it any better  :undecided:

the hose itself has a heavy duty jubiliee clip but its securing it to the EGR valve thats the problem   i'm not convinced the clamps being produced by SFS are going to do the job; that and it looks like there isn't enough interest to warrant them going into production  :undecided:

given the way VW secure the hoses, there isn't really a better way, in theory it works well, but the bit that stick out wear and the clips can fracture.

you need some sort of compression joint, like you would use in plumbing
