It gets better mate. Turns out said chop stick was Mrs Horney's and had been stolen from the chinky on her 21st birthday and had great sentimental value. I'm in the Dog House to put it mildy as the matching one I ruined last year stirring paint.

Cheers Nick - you've just thrown a load of laughing into today AS WELL as tomorrow.  Next time t'other half is p1ssed off with me about something I'll point her at this post and just say 'and you think I'm thoughtless?'
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

* Oil and Oil Filter change - Done
* Change oil filter housing gasket - Done
* Remove Sump and check oil pump gauze. Refit with new gasket. - Sacked off till next month
* Regrease both outer CV joints and replace zip ties - To Do Tomorrow
* Fit new Mintex 1155 pads and bed them in. - To do tomorrow.

Todays gasket replacement went well part fromknocking the dizzy with a spanner so therefore knocking my timing out. "No Worries" I thought, I'll reset that later with my mates timing light. Oil filter housing gasket repalced, new oil, new filter, filled with water and bled. Jobs a gooden, now to reset the timing. Ah.

Turns out with the strobe running noen of the timing marks show up no matter how far you turn the dizzy. Decide to find TDC on No 1 and mark up the fly wheel then try and guess 6 Deg BTDC. Stick a chop stick in number won through the sparkplug hole and rock car in 1st gear till the piston tops out. "Snap" WTF was that! Remove shop stick from No 1 to find the last 1/2" missing presumed lost inside bore No 1. Oh Sh!t!!!!! For the next hour and a bit me and my mate Chris spent much time with garden wire, tweasers and blue tack and eventually got it out. Thank f**k for that, it would have been worse the worst excuse for missing a track day.

lol, thats some funny sh!t!

is the flywheel lightened? the timing mark might have been chopped off. theres a way of timing it from the bottom pully i think. not sure exactly how to do it though. or mark the flywheel like you tried to do and use an adjustable timing gun. for now turn it till it idles at the same speed as it used to do, then it will pretty much be right

Me and Chris found the timing marks on the flywheel but they didn't ever show up with the strobe no matter how far we advanced or retarded the dizzy.

I'm thinking I'll spend some time getting TDC bang on then mark that up on the flywheel with tipex. Then I was thinking of finding the old marks and measure the distance between the TDC mark and the 6deg BTDC mark and use that measurement to put a 6deg BTDC mark by the newly marked correct TDC mark.

That should work right?

it would be easier to go off the bottom pulley. i spotted someones said how to do it in the mk2 section. i cant see how you gonna be able to mark the new 6 BTDC accuately enough tbh. but then again the marks on the bottom pulley arent pefectly accuate either! i think marking a new tdc and using an adjustable gun would be the best bet if you can get one by tues, if not use the pulley.

Just reserved one online and off to pick it up in a bit. Damn Alex for not tightening the dizzy properly when he last worked on the car. If it had been locked off properly all this would never have happened.

Still all this extra work on the car gets me out of having to go out this afternoon to one of the Mrs's freinds birthday party thing.
