I think at motorway speeds its more economical to have the a/c on and the windows shut but in and around town its the other way round..

Oh yeah I agree, I find that just leaving it on econ on the motorway lets in enough cold air for me unless its a roasting hot day, and lets face it, we dont get many of them.

Bloody northerners  :D

My car has just had its second year service. While it was in the service bay I went to talk to the Technician, as you do. The only fault that the car was showing was a low gas pressure level in the air con system. They re-pressurised the system for free and added a UV dye to show any leaks. I need to take it back in a couple of weeks for them to look for leaks with a UV light.

He told me it could be a sealor valve, one of the lines, the compressor or the condensor at the front of the car. If a stone has gone through the condensor its not covered under warrenty!  And the front end needs to come off!  So after reading this thread I'm hoping its the compressor!

For info.............taken from a previous thread:

I have had enormous problems with my AC............2006 model GTI.  I discovered later that there were serious issues with a certain make of compressor fitted around 2006 and that a Technical Service Bulletin was issued in 2007 to address this problem.
My AC packed up when the car was less than 2 years old and had only about 20K Km on the clock.  What had happened was that the compressor had destroyed itself and deposited all manner of sh1te throughout the AC circuit!  Now a simple compressor replacement and re-gas is a complete waste of time as the sh1te in the circuit will cause a very rapid destruction of the new compressor.  The solution, as outlined in the service bulletin (from page 4), is to replace the condenser (that's the radiater next to the engine cooling radiater in front of the car); replace the compressor with a different make and replace the expansion valve, together with a complete and thorough flushing of the refrigerant circuit.
My French stealers, in their wisdom, simply replaced the compressor...................3 TIMES!!!!!  Imagine the cost! Fortunately all under guarantee.  Anyway, before wrecking a fourth compressor they got wise and replaced the entire system!  This lasted for 6 months over the Winter but when things started to warm up I realised that the cooling was not what is should be so I thought...................Merde! Here we go again!  However the stealers now have a new service manager who is very much on the ball and after verifying that the gas charge was OK they quickly diagnosed the problem as a dodgy interior temperature sensor which was replaced and we now have cooling again!

I have a copy of the Technical Service Bulletin if anybody wants it (in .pdf form) but I do not know how to upload to the

My opinon, but opinon's are like arse all's and we have one but I prefer my own one

If you let me know your email address, I will forward a copy.  Just thought it would be good to upload the Technical Bulletin to the forum for general use but seems it ain't possible!

It would be great if you could post up the technical bulletin, I have problems with my MY06 air con at the minute, and I'm out of warranty :(

Do you get free web space from your internet provider?  You could upload it there and post up the link.
