Why are there so many different starters for my car?!

I'm in the process of replacing mine.  I had huge problems getting the correct one as there are 5 to choose from!  Why so many for the same car?

When you say same car are you including ALL mk3's?

If so the 8v / 16v / Vr6 will be different for a start!

And why is it a problem? If you go to dealer and give them the reg no. it comes up with the correct part!

No - There were 5 different options when I gave the dealer the details for my car!  Its a 1.9GL TDi.
I had to get the starter out to get the part number before I could get the correct one.  No easy task when you are about as good with a spanner as Chelsea are at accepting defeat.

All's well that ends well though.  Car now back on the road starting first time every time.  The old one had done 155000 miles, so the new one should keep me running for a while.
