Dunno if this will work with a VW, but a friend of mine was clocking his Corsa ages ago, and he simply separated the clear cover from the front of the clocks and then wound back the numbers with the tip of a broken pencil (so that the numbers didn't get scratched).

Clocks worked perfectly afterwards.

Would this work on a VW?

Ive read people have done this (with a rubber tipped pencil) but I havnt been bold enough to try it yet!

Does anyone know how the clear fascia comes off?

the speedo comes out of it easily enough, but to get to the numbers you either have to take the needle & face off (needle can be tight and snap) or try to pop them round from above. you need to pry the gear casing open a bit as you do it, it worked for me but you might damage the numbers or the gearing system.
