GTI Paintwork
« on: 21 April 2009, 18:39 »
I have to say, I do love my ED30, but the paintwork on the GTI is some of the poorest Ive seen! Is it me, or does it seem really thin?

I do a lot of motorway driving, so Im to expect stone chips etc now and then - unwanted, but expected.

Today I noticed a slight chip which I initially thought was some dirt or somet on the paint. So I tried to scrape it off with my fingernail, and I chipped off a little more paint!

Luckily, this was in a hidden place, so not really noticable. Just made me think of how thin the paint on the car really is!

Maybe I should wrap it in plastic!!!

It does seem very prone to scratch / chip at the slightest touch

The paint itself is soft as it has to adhere to modern enviromental standards but the clear coat is quite tough.

Is there anything I can have applied to protect the paintwork a little better from chips??
Any treatment besides a plastic film on the bonnet etc?

I heard of some Diamondbright stuff once - any recommendations?

I'm really impressed with mine.  36,000 miles and very few chips of my diamond black front (touch wood)

You either have to go with plastic film or use a bonnet bra I'm afraid...

The paint on Mk4s is approx 80 microns on average, the paint on mk5s is anywhere between 120 and 160 microns.

I've got quite a lot of small stone chips on my bonnet.  They really stand out after a wash but not so bad when the car is dirty.  Not sure if some colours are worse than others.  Mine is red.

Ditto, mine is red too.  Lots of tiny little hair like scratches that seem to randomly appear too.

Interesting about the mk4 vs mk5 paint thickness, I had a diamond black mk4 and there was a lot less marks on that and it was 90k / 8 years old when I traded her in.  Maybe it's just marks are a lot more noticeable on red  :undecided:
