Fuse, relay (most likely I think), bulbs, wiring, earths, stalks.

its on the steering column, the front lights dont work with hazzards, indicators or alarm however the rears work with all these.

right you can rule out the fuse, stalk, relay and stalk wiring, as all of these items are common to both front & rear indicators.  Both the front indicator and sidelight are on the same wire from the fusebox (seperate wire for each side obviously ) but they have seperate earths so its most likely the signal wire at fault rather than the earth.

A1/2 and A2/4 are the pin numbers on the rear of the fusebox (see the fusebox faq for more info)

1st thing to check is you get voltage at the indicator/sidelight connectors, or just stuff another bulb in if you have any spare.

Does the car have an alarm by any chance?

edit: well you can rule out stalk/fuse/stalk wiring and relay if the wiring hasnt been chopped about with in the past, who knows what might have been done!

ah, possibly the alarm was chopped into these 2 wires and is causing the fault.  should be pretty obvious though if you follow the wiring from the alarm to where they've been spliced into the car loom.

Cheers for the input guys. Well I got to say it isnt the cars fault seems to be who ever did the electrics made a crap job of it.

Changed the rear bulbs to chromed yellow ones as it has crystal lights and they were flashing white. Front left indictor has no bulb or holder so thats why it dosnt work (ordered new one from VW) and the right fronts wires were held together with tape! So spent the evening re doing the connectors to that.

However my main problem is the side indicators in the wing. Popped one of them off and low and behold no bulb, wires or holder! God knows how it passed the MOT last time around! Or what the last owner was thinking. Any ideas where the wires for these go to? I couldnt seem to see any at all.

its probably just fallen behind the wing, the holders dont clip into the repeators particularly well. in the past ive used a metal coathanger bent to a hook to fish them out, or you could remove the arch liner.  if the wiring deffo isnt there, you'll find 2 plug under the header tank, with black/green and black/white (iirc) wires, this is where the side repeator loom plugs in :)

its not the white 2 pin plug with a yellow wire, thats for the front fog loom :)

oh cock.... are the front indicators blue and brown? Think I used the Green and brown wires for the front indicators as I thought the blue and brown ones were for the fogs.
