For puttin on polish any foam applicator should do it like this:

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/sonus-foam-applicator-pad.php

for wax i use these atm because they came in a my collonite 915 set i bought

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/terry-applicator-pads-twin-pack.php

then buff off with a microfibre cloth

i think ive covered it there lol, there are a few other people on here that know more than me about detailing and can point you in the right direction aswell

Polish removes impefections and a wax seals the paint work and make sit more shiny.

yeah what he said lol, basically a polish is an abrasive and can come in different grades so that you can get rid of swirl marks and scratches, the polish will then leave a nicce shiny finish for you to put on a wax on to seal all your hard work in.

ok, so after the clay what polish should I use? is the autoglym super resin ok? I have a fair amount of swirl marks and minor scratches to hide!

i think super resin is abit of a gray area some people love it some hate it, personally i dont think its too bad but its mega chalky so its proper hard to get off black trim. at the moment i use poorboys polishes off elite car care, but im sure there are better out there im hoping guy will pop along for some advice on them soon lol

Personally i love the autoglym products and use the ultra deep shine polish, it is chalky and is difficult to get off trim but just be careful and you have no worries!
