Questions for 300bhp+ Edition30 GTIs
« on: 09 April 2009, 17:55 »
Hi guys and girls (if there are any with such cars)!

I am E30 owner myself, Oettinger Stage 1 (just remap and KN airfilter) 300hp/400Nm.
I've been thinking about Oettinger Stage 2 (actually waiting for the offer) - which adds S3 intercooler, bigger exhaust from cat, new fuel pump, and remap to 330/460 (according to web page), but I don't know...   :undecided:

Don't you guys worry about engine longevity? I mean, with all these changes and much higher output, the engine and the turbo, and the gearbox (I have manual) and the clutch will get s :shocked:tressed much more than expected by VW when they built the car. 60-80 thousand kilometers and then turbo packs up, or clutch wears out, or worse?

What is your take on the above? How much have you driven in your tuned E30? Did you really stress it after you tuned it? Did you have any mechanical problems?

If I do 330/460, would I need a new clutch? Would I need something else changed?

I am really at crossroads, my heart says go but my head says no. I mean, if I wanna be with her, baby, there will be price to pay?

Or you guys are so loaded that a busted engine does not make any difference for you?

Its inevitable that pushing the engine and other components to such limits is going to shorten their lifespan, and stress components much more then usual.
Personally, if I were you, I dont think I would go any further - unless you have the money to get other parts sorted when they go 'ping'!

Pesky, just do it!

Yes, of course, the more 'stress' you put through the car, the sooner things will fail.  But just ask yourself honestly, if you do get the stage 2, just how often will you be using all 330 of those ponies?  Certainly not all the time.  The real secret to the longevity of a car - remap/modified or not - is to treat it properly.  Never, ever drive it hard when cold, and keep it well maintained.

Obviously, the more you modifiy a car, then the shorter the intervals become between maintenance - oil changes are a classic example.  And you will also need to only use higher spec parts - it wont do any good to get some cheap oil from Wall Mart or Lidl - and expect it to properly protect a 330 PS monster.  You should only use high quality stuff, like BP/Aral/Castrol, or Fuchs or Motul, or OMV oils - of the correct spec.

Finally, for the record, even a bog standard GTI, if badly abused - can fail much earlier than a modified but well-cared for car.

The returns in additional power/torque for the outlay aren't very good value for money - you're looking at £1500+ for those parts - for a 30bhp increase? A blocked air filter or running on normal unleaded will reduce power by at least that amount??

I'm struggling with wheel hop at the moment, so more torque can only make the problem worse?? You'd be better off investing in a set of stickier road legal soft compound tyres abd getting the 300 horses down better.

You got the Neuspeed Torque Arm Insert?

Nope, does it make that much of a difference?

I agree with teutonic tamer, although I've only recently acquired my 5 door edition 30 (it now has revo stage2 code, fuel pump, forge dv valve plus jetex turbo back system imminently).

90% of my time is spent pottering around, I'm only averaging 7000 miles a year but that hasn't put me off tinkering with it.
As long as you look after it, there's no reason to expect a shortened lifespan although I am somewhat anal about car care generally.

If anyone fancies there car being detailed in bristol, let me know.

Well, Oettinger stage 2 is 4500 euro. But since I have the Stage 1 map, it'll be about 3000 euro. (Switzerland, here is everything expensive). And that 3000 euro include no sport downpipe. So, yes, the return on that investment is MUCH smaller than return on initial 230-to-300 remap. BUT I thought, with bigger IC and bigger fuel pump and larger exhaust the engine would fill better, even though output is not that much higher.

I already have ECS dog-bone insert and KW V2 coilovers. KWs are terribly stiff, and my interior rattles worse than an old Skoda with 140 thousand km, that I once had a ride in. The quality of interior in my GTI is appalling. There is rattle in the door, rattle in the middle of dashboard, terrible rattle from the back seats. Also, with 30mm drop in the front, front tyre slammed into the arch bending out some metal, so now I have to bend it back and repaint the whole side.

So yes, I asked Oettinger for an offer, but when I see it, it'll probably be shocking. IF I had the means I'd do it right away, together with LSD etc. But that is not the case. So I need to consider my options carefully. In any case, I am with E30 for another 3 years, that is 100% certain.

I also have FOrge DV lying around for a year. I asked Oettinger guys to install it, and they said it'd take 2 hours. I decided against it as they do not know english and I was afraid they'd f**k something up.
