I'll give them all a go :)

Here is the motions:

Starts flat > push stalk (Click) wiper moves to full upright (click) stops.

Full upright (click) wiper moves to 3 inches before flat (click) stops.

3 inches before flat (click) moves to full upright and back 3 inches etc

so it's like moving on a bit each time and finally returns to flat!

Driving me mad, but I'll do all the things a you say :)

cheers

Could have something to do with the parking circuit. It uses a different circuit to park it, when the relay switches off, it uses a different 12V to ensure that it parks properly (bit confusing) could be that once the rel;ay clicks off, normally engaging the park circuit, it doesn't engage the parking circvuit, hence it stopping? Son't know if this is the way it works in Golfs, but i know a lot of old cars used to do this, they probably changed it now to something digtal...

From the flat to upright description sounds like you wipers had the lay flat mod done.

Therefore you should check that the bolt on the motor is secure and that the splines are located and not damaged. (The clicking could be the splines moving over each other)

(More info on the layflat mod in case you need it http://www.matey-matey.com/lay_flat_wiper.shtml)

My mk2 did this also and I changed relay no 72 and that solved the problem.

I had a similar problem on my old mk2. The motor would make a noise as usual but the wiper wouldn't do a full movement.

In the end I bought an entire mechanism and motor off ebay (a 10 quid bargain) and went through replacing bit by bit till I got it working properly.
Basically the problem turned out to be the driveshaft that goes through the boot lid had got really well stuck, which had in turn worn out the motor a bit. Replacing those two bits cured it.
