Abel kept saying 8v's had more torque so Cain stabbed him.

Well, Ive had both, a well looked after 8v on a G plate with 120k on the clock and that went like a bat outta hell off the mark. Now I own a 16v on a J plate with 174k on the clock and I can honestly say that I thought it was flat as a witches tit compared to the 8v on take off though I know the 16v would wax it once the race went on - it really does get rapid once you get into those higher revs.

As to whether one is faster than the other well Id be tempted to go with an earlier comment in the thread about how the power band on the 2 compares, the official vw graph http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=21577.0 shows them about the same output till the 16v rapidly gains more power in the higher revs - and that the 8v just `feels` quicker

Good point but what is the weight differance between the two?

16v's are generaly a bit heavyer because they generaly have more toys installed.     an 8 and 16v of the same speck are almost same weight tho the 16v is still a tad heavyer
