Need some painting advice

While fixing up my wing, I thought I'd give myself some painting experience. Ok so it's all rattle can work, but worth a try right?

Sanded down the edges where paint was missing/flaking/rusting.
Then smoothed it all down with wet and dry (working from 400 to 1200)
Wet and dried some stone chips and a massive scratch (looks like it was keyed).
Primed the bare metal, and wet dried it once dried, as well as whole wing ready for some paint. (done off the car)

Doesn't quite look too good after laying down some paint.
Looks like I've got a run here, I assume I can just rub this down before next coat/clear coat?


Am I right in assuming that the flat look of the paint is because I need some clear coat and polish?


So just wonder what I do now, am thinking I should wet and dry it again, and give it another coat of paint.
When that's dry and I want to go for clear coat, do I wet and dry it again before I apply clear coat?

cant see due to bright sunlight! But generally metallic paints do have a clear laquer on top.

If not normal paint needs a very fine rub down with rubbing compound and a good polish.

the runs are down to putting the paint on to much/thick or not alowing enough time between coats to flash off, they will rub out with wet and dry paper but i would colour the area again.
i would deffo say it needs a clear coat most paints do unless its a 2k solid colour.

Yes, did sort of rush it last night, was losing light fast, plus trying to deal with faces in two different planes.

Will wet and dry it on Sat, put some more colour on it, then try some clear coat once it's dry.

Good to know I'm sort of thinking along the right lines Doubt it will look great, but will be good enough for now.

yea very fine wet sand the runs out! always remember preparation is the most important part of paintwork! thin even coats every 10 -15 mins will help to stop getting paint runs!

i had this problem i left my car in my local town centre when i came back i found it had been key'd prob by some saxo driver like its my fault they drive it lol, i sand it down to bare, used a good undercoat and layed on the colour a nice distance away and about 20 mins apart justto be safe the sanded lightly between coats and lay'd on the colour once more add my clear ade polished away looks good as new  he didnt get the better of me.....

Takes a while but a powdered rubbing compound as suggested above works a treat.

Your arm will hurt, you'll lose the will to live but it's all worth it in the end, turns the matt look to a shiny finish. A little wax just to perfect it.

It's tough without a proper work area, some people scoff when you tell them it was outside, but what choice do we rally have?

Well I've now setup a little area in my garage, tie the wing to the rafters an old sheet behind and below, perfection.
Ran out of paint, grrr! Waiting for a resupply to arrive.
