« on: 15 March 2009, 02:37 »
ok, its happened twice in 3 weeks now but basically im driving normally, try to find 1st to set off and it just wont go in. clutch is fully pressed and wont go into any gear except reverse. quite anoying especially at a set of traggic lights in rush hour haha!

any ideas as to what it could be, there are no odd noises and its on a L reg mk3 1.4 hmm...

If its happening like that in all gears im worndering if it could be your clutch going.  Otherwise the clutch cable or linkages could be at fault  That is a classic sign of the clutch not being fully disengaged, but gear linkages will also do this,  especially if the adjuster nut has slipped but i usually find the gears will feel all wonky and in the wrong place, best way to find out is to see if its selecting gears with the clutch in stood still with the engine off.. if it is i would say its time to look into the clutch side of it.

i have a mk4 golf, and to be honest i have a bit of the same problem, the clutch pressed, try and change gear and just doesnt have it, feels like its stuck. Buy i have a ECS clutch upgrade so it cant be my clutch, i have been to several motorsport garages and they have said
it sounds like a recon on the gear box or even a new gear box second hand

gearboxes very rarely fail in all gears

normaly one gear is much worse than the others,   or theyy stick in wont engade it.  easy way to check for gearbox prblems is drain the oil into a tub and chuck a magnet in,   and see how big a shiney tree grows on it,   some is normal but bumps = knackerd
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
